How to Install an SUV Sleeping Platform Without Drilling

Compass Camper sleeping platform kit in the cargo area of a Toyota RAV4

You do not need to drill a single hole to put a sleeping platform in an SUV. Most SUVs and crossovers have factory cargo tie-down points in the floor, built to hold cargo in place. A platform made for your vehicle sits on the cargo floor, and turnbuckles pull it down tight to those points. It goes in with no tools in about 10 to 15 minutes, and when it comes out, the car is exactly as it left the factory.

If you are shopping for a sleeping platform, the bigger worry is often not the price. It is damaging the car. This is how a no-drill platform attaches, what install actually looks like, and the few vehicles that need an extra step.

Why Not Just Bolt It Down?

Bolting a platform through the floor is permanent. It goes through the underbody coating and it hurts resale, because the next buyer sees holes where the factory floor used to be. It also means the platform is not coming out for a hardware store run, a passenger, or a trade-in. A platform that straps to the factory points gives you the same solid bed and leaves nothing behind.

How a No-Drill Sleeping Platform Attaches

  • The trunk frame sits on the cargo floor between the wheel wells. On our kits it is aluminum T-slot extrusion, and the drawers ride inside it on heavy-duty locking slides.
  • Turnbuckles hook the frame to your vehicle's factory tie-down points. You tighten them by hand until the frame is snug against the floor.
  • The bed extension slides forward over the folded rear seats. It levels the slope of the seatbacks and spans the footwell gap behind the front seats, so the bed is flat over the folded seats.
  • The flip-over headrest folds over the front of the extension and hangs from your front seat headrests for support.

Nothing is screwed, glued, or cut. Every piece of hardware attaches to something the factory already put there. The one exception is the 2020 to 2025 Ford Escape Hybrid, covered below.

Installing It, Step by Step

  1. Fold the rear seats down.
  2. Set the trunk platform in the cargo area. Hook the turnbuckles to the factory tie-down points and tighten them by hand.
  3. Attach the bed extension to the trunk frame and slide it forward over the folded seats until it spans the footwell gap.
  4. Flip the headrest over and connect it to the front seat headrests.
  5. Lay your mattress on top.

About 10 to 15 minutes the first time. Every kit ships fully assembled, so there is nothing to build before step one.

Driving With It Installed

Most owners leave the platform in year round. To carry passengers, slide the bed extension back into the cargo area and raise the rear seats. The drawers and trunk platform stay where they are. On the FJ Cruiser, put the rear seat bottoms back in first. The optional 60/40 split bed extension lets you keep one rear seat up for a passenger or a dog while the other side stays a bed.

Getting to the Spare Tire

You do not need to take the kit out of the vehicle. Unhook all four turnbuckles from the anchor points, then slide the trunk frame forward over the folded rear seats. That exposes the spare tire area under the cargo floor.

Taking It Out

Undo the turnbuckles and lift it out. Kits with drawers weigh about 75 to 100 pounds depending on the vehicle, and bed-only platforms about 45 to 60. Nothing stays behind in the car, so it goes back to stock for a trade-in or a road trip with a full back seat.

Vehicles That Need One Extra Step

  • Ford Escape Hybrid, 2020 to 2025: two anchor points need to be installed near the tailgate first, an easy job for an auto body shop or hitch installer. The kit then uses the second row seat bases as two more anchor points, with heavy-duty paracord and camming clips. Those two added anchor points stay in the vehicle if the kit comes out.
  • Toyota FJ Cruiser: the rear seat bottoms come out to make room for the last section of the bed. They remove without tools.
  • Toyota 4Runner, 4th and 5th gen: the optional third row seat, and on the 5th gen the sliding rear cargo deck, come out before any platform goes in. They unbolt and go back in for resale. The 6th gen third row has its own kit option instead.

Adding Storage Drawers Without Drilling

On a kit, the drawers are part of the trunk frame, so they anchor the same way the bed does. Each drawer comfortably holds about 50 pounds, and the slides are rated for 250 to 300 pounds fully extended. Keep the turnbuckles snug: a tight frame is what keeps a loaded drawer from tipping when it is pulled all the way out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a sleeping platform damage my car?

Not if nothing is drilled. The folded seats and cargo floor carry a person on a mattress without trouble. What damages an interior is bolting through the floor or dragging a heavy plywood deck across the trim on every trip.

Do I need tools to install it?

No. The turnbuckles tighten by hand, and the kit arrives fully assembled.

How long does install take?

About 10 to 15 minutes the first time, depending on the vehicle.

Can I still use my back seats?

Yes. Slide the bed extension back and raise the seats. The platform and drawers stay in. On the FJ Cruiser, put the seat bottoms back in first.

Can it go back to stock?

Yes. Undo the turnbuckles, lift the kit out, and the vehicle is exactly as it was. The only exception is the 2020 to 2025 Escape Hybrid, where the two added anchor points stay.

Every kit is built for a specific make, model and year. See the sleeping platforms by vehicle, or read the FAQ for weight, drawer loads and local pickup.
